I visited Amsterdam recently and took a little TFIOS tour! I started at the library where John wrote some of the book and then went on a hunt to find the places in the book and got to meet another Nerdfighter in the process!

When I go to Amsterdam, I’ll be doing this.

Friendly reminder that this creepy moment existed.

#she was laughing at her husband and son#people who she loved dearly enough to give up her life#and snape took that and cut them out of it so he could pretend she was laughing for him#her love in the letter was for sirius who was best man at her wedding and her good friend who fought at her side in the order#and snape took that so he could pretend her love was for him#snape is fucking trash and this is not romantic at all

this this this this this omg this si so disgusting this guy is a creep who feels entitled to Lily’s love even though he’s done nothing to deserve it

NO NONONONO!! Stop RIGHT THERE!!!

"this guy is a creep who feels entitled to Lily’s love even though he’s done nothing to deserve it”

He was her friend for years, before they even got to hogwarts, he was madly in love with her till the day he died and never tried to make her love him back, he was always there for her, even when she wasn’t alive anymore, protecting her only child, even though it ripped him to shreds inside knowing it was also the child of the man he hated, was bullied by mercilessly etc. He was not in the wrong to WANT love from her, because he NEVER tried to force it from her even though he was an EXPERT at making potions he could have easily slipped love potion into a drink of hers, but he didn’t. He just lived in hope that one day she would love him even though he knew it would never happen. He knew the context of the love she sent to Sirius was the kind of love you share with friends, all he wanted was to stay close with her and be her friend again, to hear and see her laugh once more, that’s why he wanted the picture. he ripped it because seeing Harry and James on the picture was a painful reminder that she was never his, all he ever wanted was her, he only lived to protect her and if she hadn’t sacrificed herself for Harry she could have still been alive. Don’t you say that he didn’t do anything to deserve her love, he stuck by her side before and during Hogwarts, he risked his life being a double agent to give Dumbledore information just so Lily’s death wasn’t in vain. All because of how much he cared for her and he cared so much for her that even though it hurt him to see Harry’s face which looks like James’ he still kept up him double agent act to help the boy who was supposed to die instead of the one person he ever truly loved. This is why he’s spiteful to Harry throughout the series, he’s angry at James for stealing away the love he never had, and he’s angry at Harry for living instead of her, but NEVER say he didn’t do anything to deserve love, because he deserved more love than he ever got, but was just unfortunate to love someone who didn’t love him back.

I’m sorry but the above argument in defense of Snape is so full of holes that I cannot let it slide.
Yes, it sucks when someone you love doesn’t love you back, but Snape’s inability and refusal to get over it is incredibly unhealthy and not at all how he should have handled the situation.  It’s made worse by the fact that he relentlessly bullied Harry and did everything he could to act as an antagonist toward Harry.  Yes, Harry was the son of someone who had bullied him and he bore more of a resemblance to his father, but he was still Lily’s son.  Snape’s treatment of Harry pretty well shows that he put his hatred of James above his love of Lily for a pretty good portion of, if not all of, their interactions.
Also, I’m not going to defend bullying, because bullying is awful, but Snape became a Death Eater.  There is a very good chance that prior to Lily’s death, he was either directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of many more people, which he is never shown as having remorse over in the books.  He literally only cares about Lily, and wants to get back at Voldemort for killing her—the other people who have been killed by Voldemort are never shown to cross his mind and he still very obviously carries a lot of the ideals regarding Muggleborns that Voldemort had (see his treatment of Hermione), making his reasons for defecting to the Order of the Phoenix pretty selfish and self-absorbed.
Also, he could have drugged her with a love potion, but didn’t?  Is that seriously being used as an argument?  ”Oh, my former friend could have drugged and raped me, but didn’t, so that makes him worthy of my attention!” is pretty much exactly what was just said.  That is the biggest pile of bullshit I have ever seen in defense of Snape.
So, no, he didn’t deserve Lily’s love.  Being her friend does not land him an automatic place in her love life and his obsession with her for the rest of his life is a lot more creepy than it is romantic.
And again there’s also the fact that he bullied Harry, bullied Hermione, bullied Neville, and actively opposed their efforts to actually stop Voldemort a great many times just because he wanted to be a jerk.  I can understand it in The Philosopher’s Stone and even in The Chamber of Secrets, but after a while I think you’d just know that if Harry Potter is up to something, he probably has a damn good reason.  Snape’s grudge against James frequently trumps his love for Lily and any protection that he offers Harry is given only when his teeth are being pulled (the only time I can think of where he helped Harry without being pretty well forced to do so was the Quidditch match in Philosopher’s Stone).  That’s not true love or romantic in any sense, that’s a grown man who got turned down in high school and never got over it.  He’s a great character, but far from a good person.

Exactly! As the original poster, this comment (and the above ‘tagged’ comment) are everything that I’ve felt about Snape but was too afraid to say because I didn’t want to deal with the hate, so I merely pointed out that the creepy moment existed.  I decided to finally comment because of this ridiculous mindset that Severus Snape deserved Lily’s love because he was her friend and introduced her to magic, etc.

But it terrifies me that this is what some people think. People think that because Snape was so nice to Lily and was her friend, he earned her and deserved her love. He didn’t earn her. She wasn’t obligated to love him. Nobody is obligated to love anyone, no matter what said person does for them! Nobody is obligated to love anyone, no matter what said person does for them! For Pete’s sake, do I need to make an edit of Snape in a fedora! Stop saying that he deserved Lily just because he was a nice guy!
